Purpose

This blog is designed to help readers learn a little more about the historical places in Scotland that I visit. Each post will provide a mixture of practical and historical information, and sometimes any interesting stories or legends associated with the place in question.

In all cases I aim to illustrate the post with a wide range of photographs. Most of these will have been taken by myself, but I also use library photographs if necessary.

The origins of this blog lie with a much older travel blog that I have been running for many years. Many of the historical places featured here will have been covered on the travel blog, but not with so much detail. If you are interested, that blog is Time4Travel.

About me

My name is David. Since moving to Scotland in 2019 I have developed a keen interest in Scottish history. This has come about from visiting some of the many historical sites I have encountered when on holiday or taking short breaks around the country.

Before moving to Scotland, I had almost no knowledge or understanding about the history of the Scottish nation. It wasn’t a subject covered by the English education system, nor it seemed did Scotland feature much in the English media. So visiting and writing about Scotland’s historical places has become an important learning opportunity for myself.

Of course, when covering history, and in particular the political manoeuvrings of the relevant period, wealthy nobles, monarchs and religion always seem to feature. As someone who is not wealthy, a royalist or religious, I find it somewhat ironic that I am writing about them so frequently. But I hope that whatever I may think on a personal level does not influence how I report historical facts. Indeed, wherever possible I try to use respected sources.

Site organisation

Every blog post is categorised by “type” and also by the Scottish region in which is located. So you can, for example, choose the “castles” category from the list on the right-hand side of every post to see the castles I have explored. Alternatively, you can look for everything by region.
